mcpstat

mcpstat adds usage tracking and analytics to your MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers. Pure Python stdlib, no required dependencies.

Track which tools get called, how often, and keep an audit trail - all in about 3 lines of code. Then just ask your AI assistant: "Give me MCP usage stats."

Why mcpstat?

MCP is becoming the standard integration layer between AI assistants and external tools. Adding observability to this layer provides concrete benefits:

Identify active vs inactive tools - Understand which tools deliver value and which can be removed or improved.
Optimize context usage - Track whether resources provide useful context or consume tokens without benefit.
Detect usage patterns - Spot agent loops, repeated calls, or unexpected tool combinations.
Measure MCP adoption - Quantify how often your LLM actually uses MCP integrations.

Without tracking, agents may pull irrelevant resources into context - leading to token waste or lower-quality responses. mcpstat provides the visibility to identify and address these issues.

Tags System

Tags enable categorization, filtering, and discovery of your MCP primitives. Use cases:

Filtering: get_catalog(tags=["api"]) returns only API-related tools
Search: Combine with query for faceted search
Analytics: Group usage stats by category
Tag clouds: Build visual representations of your server's capabilities

Auto-Tag Extraction

When syncing MCP tools, tags are auto-derived from tool names:

Names are split on - and _ and normalized to lowercase
Stopwords (the, to, from, and, etc.) are filtered
Use normalize_tags(words, filter_stopwords=True) for custom extraction

Querying by Tags

# Get all tools with specific tags (AND logic - must have all)

The filtering uses AND logic (tools must contain all specified tags) and can be combined with text search for faceted discovery. The response includes an all_tags array showing the complete tag inventory across all tracked tools.

Once your MCP server with mcpstat is configured, you can interact with it through AI assistants.

Natural Language Queries

Just ask your AI assistant:

"Give me MCP usage stats"
"Which tools are used most often?"

The AI will automatically invoke get_tool_usage_stats or get_tool_catalog based on your question.

mcpstat adds two tools to your MCP server:

Tag Filtering (AND Logic)

Filter tools by tags - must match all specified tags:

Text Search

Search across names, descriptions, and tags:

VS Code / Cursor / JetBrains (with GitHub Copilot):

The AI invokes the appropriate tool automatically

Tools appear as callable functions
Select tool → fill parameters → get results

Running the Example Servers

The repo includes two example servers:

minimal_server.py - Basic usage tracking (~80 lines)
example_server.py - Full demo with prompts, resources, and built-in stats tools

CLI Server

Run the example MCP server directly (it will wait for an MCP client connection):

Key points:

stat.record() should be the first line in handlers to ensure 100% tracking
It never throws - tracking failures are logged but don't crash your server
Stats persist in SQLite (./mcp_stat_data.sqlite by default)
