MCP Server for the Marvel Developer API, enabling interaction with characters and comics data. The main goal of the project is to show how an MCP server hosted using Azure Functions can be used to interact with APIs.
Note: All data used by this MCP server is fetched from the official Marvel API and owned by Marvel. This project is not affiliated with Marvel in any way.

Sign up for a Marvel Developer API account and get your public and private API keys.

Run the Server Locally

An Azure Storage Emulator is needed. There are two options:

Start Azurite in a Docker container:
docker run -p 10000:10000 -p 10001:10001 -p 10002:10002 \ mcr.microsoft.com/azure-storage/azurite -
You can use the Azurite VS Code extension. Once the extension is installed, run
Azurite: Startthrough the VS Code command palette.

Install the required dependencies and build the project.

Deploy to Azure for Remote MCP
Run this azd command to provision the function app, with any required Azure resources, and deploy your code:
azd up
You can opt-in to a VNet being used in the sample. To do so, do this before azd up
azd env set VNET_ENABLED true
Additionally, API Management can be used for improved security and policies over your MCP Server, and App Service built-in authentication can be used to set up your favorite OAuth provider including Entra.
Using Tools in GitHub Copilot

Now that the mcp server is discoverable, open GitHub Copilot and select
Agentmode (notAskorEdit). -
Select the "refresh" button in the Copilot chat text field to refresh the server list.

Select the "🛠️" button to see all the possible tools, including the ones from this repo.

Put a question in the chat that would naturally invoke one of the tools, for example:
List 10 marvel characters. Include images. What comics is Wolverine in? Which characters appear in the Avengers comics?
